Dr. Biswo Nath Poudel officially assumed his duties as the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) today at the central office in Baluwatar. In his inaugural address, he highlighted his top priorities: safeguarding public deposits and reforming loan policies to foster economic stability.
Governor Poudel emphasized the need for effective coordination between fiscal and monetary policies while preserving the autonomy of the central bank. "Monetary policy must complement fiscal policy to ensure economic growth. However, we must focus more on supervisory strength than regulatory rigidity," he stated.
He underlined that future policies would be based on consultation with stakeholders rather than unilateral decisions, stressing the importance of dialogue-driven governance. Addressing media queries about the resignation of NRB Executive Director Dr. Gunakar Bhatt, Poudel remarked that the matter was internal and required no further comment.
One of his first decisions as Governor was authorizing the printing of new banknotes in Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 denominations. Dr. Poudel's tenure begins at a crucial juncture, with Nepal’s financial system grappling with challenges like liquidity management, economic growth, and regulatory reforms. His approach signals a commitment to transparency, collaboration, and strengthening institutional frameworks.
