Commercial banks in Nepal have published new interest rates for Chaitra 2082. The maximum average interest rate on individual fixed deposits has decreased from 4.56 percent in Falgun to 4.49 percent in Chaitra, a decline of 0.07 percentage points. Among the 20 commercial banks, six banks have reduced their interest rates while 14 banks have maintained the previous month’s rate. Nepal Bank has reduced the interest rate the most.

Kathmandu – Non-banking assets (NBA) and loan write-offs in Nepal’s banks and financial institutions have been increasing due to the slowdown in economic activities. According to Nepal Rastra Bank, the total non-banking assets of banks and financial institutions reached NPR 51.20 billion by mid-February of the current fiscal year. During the first seven months of the fiscal year, these assets increased by around NPR 650 million, while total loan write-offs rose to NPR 9.86 billion. The slowdown in the economy has reduced borrowers’ repayment capacity, forcing banks to acquire collateral and write off more bad loans. Rising non-banking assets may also affect banks’ profitability and shareholder dividends. To address the issue, the government is preparing to establish an Asset Management Company (AMC) to help manage non-performing loans and distressed assets.

Kathmandu – Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has absorbed a large amount of liquidity from the banking system during the first seven months of the current fiscal year 2025/26 (FY 2082/83). According to the central bank, a net liquidity absorption of NPR 315.86 trillion was carried out through various monetary management instruments, significantly higher than in the same period last year. During the period, NRB also purchased USD 3.96 billion from the foreign exchange market, injecting over NPR 564 billion into the system. However, interbank transactions among banks and financial institutions declined compared to the previous year.
