Government to Establish Digital Bank; Asset Management Company and NEPSE Restructuring Also Prioritized

The Government of Nepal has announced plans to establish the country’s first digital bank, aligning with the rapid advancement of information technology. President Ram Chandra Paudel made the announcement while presenting the government’s policy and program for the fiscal year 2082/83 during a joint session of the Federal Parliament on Friday.

According to the President, the government aims to expand IT infrastructure, promote a digital economy, and increase cashless financial transactions. To support this vision, necessary legal and policy frameworks will be developed to facilitate the establishment of a digital bank.

Additionally, the policy document outlines the formation of an Asset Management Company to address the growing burden of non-banking assets and bad loans within banks and financial institutions.

The government has also committed to strengthening the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) and restructuring the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) to enhance transparency and efficiency in the capital market.

These measures signal the government’s strong focus on digital finance transformation, capital market reform, and financial sector stabilization.
