The official email ID of the Nepal Securities Board (Sebon) has fallen into the hands of hackers. The board has issued a notice claiming the issue is due to technical problems, but internal sources suggest that hackers may have sent directive emails to more than a dozen companies using the compromised email. Investigations into the matter are reportedly underway.
According to senior officials of the board, the email ID is currently under the control of hackers. It is understood that emails resembling regulatory directives have been sent to various companies. “We have only issued a notice labeling it as a technical issue, but the reality is that hackers have gained access to the email,” a senior source revealed on condition of anonymity. The board’s official statement reads, “There has been a technical issue with the board’s official emails. Necessary actions are being taken to resolve it, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused to stakeholders.” However, sources claim this statement is merely an attempt to cover up the incident.
There are also claims that hackers have attempted to breach the board’s website, raising serious questions about the overall digital security of the organization. Experts in the securities market have described the incident as grave, pointing to weaknesses in the board’s cyber security. “Such hacking attempts on the email and website of these institutions affect the credibility of the entire market,” said a market analyst. While the board has stated that further investigations are ongoing, no official response has been provided yet.
This incident has sparked a debate about the need for enhanced cyber security in Nepal’s financial sector. Stakeholders have been advised to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of any emails received from the board. For further details, they are directed to use the board’s official website or contact numbers.
