Nepal Elected Chair of WTO Committee on Trade and Environment
Nepal has been elected as the Chair of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Committee on Trade and Environment. According to Nepal’s Permanent Mission in Geneva to the United Nations and other international organizations, the WTO General Council meeting held on March 11 (Falgun 27) unanimously selected Nepal to lead the committee for a one-year term. The Committee on Trade and Environment serves as an important platform where WTO member countries discuss the impact of trade policies on the environment and the effects of environmental policies on international trade. The committee also addresses issues related to climate change, sustainable development, and environmentally responsible trade practices among member nations. For Nepal, which is currently in the process of graduating from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category, this role is considered a significant diplomatic achievement. Officials believe the position will help Nepal strengthen cooperation with WTO member states and support efforts to integrate Nepal’s trade more effectively into the global market.Nepal will be represented in the committee by Ram Prasad Subedi, Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva. Under his leadership, Nepal is expected to contribute actively to discussions aimed at balancing global trade growth with environmental protection.
