From Village to Victory: How Rajan K.C. from Okhaldhunga Mastered Nepal’s Share Market Born in a small village in Okhaldhunga, Rajan K.C. never dreamed of sitting in a fancy office or flying abroad for a job. What he did instead was far more inspiring: he built a successful career in Nepal’s share market from scratch — all from his mobile phone. Rajan’s journey began in 2016 (2073 B.S.) when he came across a Facebook post mentioning the “NEPSE” index. Curious and clueless, he dived into YouTube videos and online news articles, eventually figuring out how to apply for his first IPO — that of Kapilvastu Cement.

Why is there fear regarding the proposed amendments in the Banking and Financial Institution Act (BAFIA)? Two sections that seek to distinguish between "bankers" and "businesspeople" have been discussed here: The first is Section 52(1), which states: "A bank or financial institution shall not provide any loan or facility to a person who has a significant ownership in the bank or financial institution or to a related party." The key terms in this section are "related," "person," and "bank." According to the definition in Section 2, "bank" refers to commercial banks and infrastructure development banks. The definition of "related person" includes both natural persons (individuals) and legal persons (companies and institutions). However, the term "significant ownership" refers only to natural persons, not institutions. Therefore, according to the proposed amendment, a bank or financial institution cannot provide loans or facilities to a related person or institution. However, such related persons or institutions may still borrow from other banks and financial institutions. The current law does not contain the term "related," and the proposed amendment clarifies this by making the provision more liberal. This change does not appear to have any significant impact.

Sanvi Energy Limited Opens IPO for General Public from Today Sanvi Energy Limited has opened its Initial Public Offering (IPO) for the general public starting today (Thursday). The company is issuing 2,415,300 units of shares at a face value of NPR 100 per share, amounting to a total worth of NPR 241.53 million. Earlier, the company had already allocated shares to project-affected locals and Nepali citizens working abroad who had received labor approval from the government. The remaining shares under the second phase are now available for the general public and will remain open for subscription until Jestha 13 (May 26). If the issue is not fully subscribed by then, it will be extended up to Jestha 23 (June 5). According to the issue manager, Nepal SBI Merchant Banking Limited, investors can apply for the IPO through any ASBA-approved bank or financial institution and their designated branches. Additionally, applications can also be submitted conveniently through the Mero Share online platform.

Dr. Vishwanath Paudel Set to be Appointed Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank Kathmandu — After lengthy discussions, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba have reached an agreement to appoint Dr. Vishwanath Paudel as the new Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank. The formal consensus was finalized on Tuesday morning. Dr. Paudel, former Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission, had resigned from the Governor Recommendation Committee after Congress proposed his name for the governorship. Widely regarded as a trusted confidant of Deuba, Dr. Paudel was appointed Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission on August 28, 2021, during Deuba’s premiership. He is also said to have a close personal relationship with Deuba’s wife, Arju Rana.
